Hospital Water Supply

Mission-Critical Water for Healthcare Facilities

Large-capacity emergency water storage engineered to meet hospital regulatory requirements, insurance standards, and life-safety codes across California.

Hospitals Can't Afford a Water Failure

Hospitals operate under some of the strictest water supply requirements of any facility type. From surgical suites and sterilization systems to fire suppression and patient care, an uninterrupted water supply is not optional — it is a life-safety requirement. Yet California's wildfire seasons and aging municipal infrastructure put that supply at risk every year.

Cal-Emergency Water Systems provides large-capacity, NFPA-certified on-site water storage that keeps your facility operational when the municipal supply fails — and helps you satisfy the regulatory, insurance, and accreditation requirements that govern hospital water infrastructure.

Regulatory & Compliance Requirements We Help You Meet

California AFL 23-21 — GACH Water Rationing Plan & Storage Requirements

View Official CDPH Letter →

Issued June 30, 2023 by CDPH, AFL 23-21 requires all General Acute Care Hospitals (GACHs) to maintain on-site water storage sufficient for 72 hours of essential operations. Minimum storage is 50 gallons per licensed bed per 24-hour period (150 gallons per bed for the full 72-hour window), with an absolute floor of 5,000 gallons. Tanks must include fittings for replenishment from transportable water sources and a means to dispense water to portable containers. GACHs were required to submit a Water Rationing Plan to HCAI's Seismic Compliance Unit by January 1, 2024. The plan must address medical, nursing, surgical, pharmacy, dietary, infection control, and equipment water needs. Authority: Title 24, Part 5 CPC §615.4.1 and §727.1.

NFPA 99 — Health Care Facilities Code

NFPA 99 mandates reliable water supply systems for medical gas, sterilization, and fire suppression in healthcare facilities. Our NFPA-certified tanks are engineered to integrate with your existing infrastructure and satisfy NFPA 99 water supply continuity requirements.

NFPA 22 & NFPA 1142 — Water Storage Standards

Pioneer Water Tanks are certified to NFPA 22 (Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection) and NFPA 1142 (Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Fire Fighting), the two primary standards governing on-site fire suppression water storage.

CMS & Joint Commission Accreditation

CMS Conditions of Participation and Joint Commission Environment of Care standards require hospitals to maintain documented emergency water supply plans. On-site storage with real-time monitoring supports your Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and accreditation documentation.

California Title 24 & HCAI

California's Health Care Access and Information agency (HCAI) requires healthcare facilities to demonstrate resilient utility infrastructure. Pre-deployed on-site water storage is a recognized strategy for meeting seismic and disaster-resilience requirements under Title 24.

Insurance & Property Risk Requirements

Many commercial property insurers require documented on-site fire suppression water supply for healthcare facilities in high fire hazard severity zones. Our NFPA-certified tanks provide the documented, inspectable storage your insurer requires.

Why Hospitals Choose Cal-Emergency Water Systems

Large-Capacity Storage

Pioneer Tanks are available in sizes from 10,000 to over 500,000 gallons — enough to sustain fire suppression, potable backup, and operational water needs through an extended municipal outage, well beyond the 72-hour AFL 23-21 minimum.

PFAS-Free AQUALINER® Liner

Our AQUALINER® Fresh liner is certified PFAS-free, ensuring stored water meets potable quality standards for patient care and drinking water backup — critical for facilities that cannot risk contamination.

Real-Time Remote Monitoring

Integrated mobile monitoring gives your facilities team and emergency management staff live visibility into water levels at all times — supporting your Water Rationing Plan documentation and Joint Commission readiness.

Site-Specific Engineering

Every installation is designed around your facility's footprint, licensed bed count, existing fire suppression infrastructure, and local AHJ requirements — not a one-size-fits-all product.

Wildfire & Disaster Resilience

When wildfires deplete municipal pressure or contaminate the water supply, your on-site Pioneer Tank keeps critical systems running — protecting patients, staff, and your facility's ability to operate.
